Social Tragic-ology: How Brands Learn to Be Part of Real News

In the wake of Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings, it’s apparent that we need to continue the conversation about how people and brands communicate during times of tragedy and crisis. Here are some social dos and don’ts to help prepare for a tragedy.

Without a doubt beautifully written and 100% true. Social is responsive and so should the people behind those efforts.

Home Sweet Home

image

Today Facebook announced Facebook Home which is essentially a new home screen for Android users. Take a look:

It connects your notifications  chat, and updated all from the home screen on Android devices and will be available April 12 from Google play or on the HTC First device. After reading ‘The Facebook Effect’ two years ago, this sort of platform is right on parr with Zuckerberg’s strategy of making Facebook not just a social destination but more of a platform that is integrated across the web and real life.

I wonder what the implications will be for iPhone users and if this will spur more to make the switch to Android. Will you switch?

After the announcement this morning, Facebook’s stock has risen already by 3% which is proof that people believe in this new platform:

Facebook News Feed Update: The Nitty Gritty

So after listening to the live-stream this morning and digesting a little bit here are some thing you might want to know about how your Facebook will look in the next few days/weeks:

  • Everything is going to be visual. Photos will be larger, words and text will be longer for articles, but more importantly photos will be bigger. So start worrying about your nose hairs and unwanted blemishes even more, because Facebook is going to highlight images.

  • Your chat will be on the left hand side and it looks as though the thumbnails of photos will be important in identifying who you are chatting with. So be warned, you don’t want to chat that ex of yours you haven’t talked to you in awhile vs your best friend

  • You will have multiple feeds. Feeds for music. Feeds for your close friends. Feeds for all friends. Feeds for brands. Feeds for those you stalk. Feeds for those people you think are hot. Feeds on feeds on feeds. (Just kidding about the last two). No but seriously, Facebook is trying to bring you a ‘personalized newspaper’

Charmin’s social media: King of the Throne

So lately Charmin’s Twitter feed has been using the hashtag “#tweetfromtheseat”

Their presence is very ‘throne’ themed. And on Facebook they’ve been been very tounge and cheek as well:

So here’s been my reaction:

Sound off on how you feel the about the poop friendly posts.

Facebook is the internet’s phone book. Twitter is its wire service. In Tumblr, 26-year-old Karp has built the web’s canvas.
